While BMW frequently releases new and exciting cars, the debut of an electric M3 will surely overshadow all other recent launches. Though the petrol-powered version will remain available, the electric M3 will be a hot topic for years—throughout its development, launch, reviews, and even preowned discussions. It's a monumental step for BMW, with lasting impact. In comparison, there’s no video series tracking the progress of the petrol M3.

BMW previously introduced an electric M2 prototype that pushed the limits of what an EV could do with over 1,000hp. While CEO Frank van Meel called it "a little bit fun," the current focus is on refining the electric M car into something more controlled and precise.

In true BMW M fashion, the car is undergoing rigorous testing, from the hottest to the coldest climates. This episode highlights testing in the icy conditions of Arjeplog, where the team is fine-tuning DSC calibration and adjusting the MDM mode’s lateral dynamics. Expect to see test drivers in full gear, a car filled with advanced tech, and engineers fine-tuning every aspect with their laptops.

The key to the car’s success lies in the “Heart of Joy,” a control unit that manages everything from the engine to brakes, steering, and DSC. This system promises faster, more responsive performance. The M team is excited about how sharp the new setup is, with the head of BMW M saying that the M EV experience is “something I’ve been waiting 45 years for.”

It’s easy to be sceptical, after all, cars drifting on snow always looks impressive, and BMW is understandably excited about their new project. But the brand has a history of proving critics wrong, and this prototype sounds incredibly promising... just wait until you hear it at 07:41.
